Why the same box costs so much more at the vet

Vet clinics buy medications in small quantities and price them with a margin that helps keep the practice running. That is not a scam, but it does mean paying 2 to 3 times the online price for the identical product is common.

Large online pharmacies buy in volume and compete with each other in public, which pushes prices down. Promotions move prices around too: first-order coupons and autoship discounts can shift the effective price by 5 to 30 percent, so we list base prices and note promotions separately instead of mixing them together.

For prescription meds like NexGard, every accredited pharmacy performs the same step: it contacts your vet and verifies the prescription before shipping. The verification is identical everywhere, so a higher price does not buy better service.

Common questions

Why does NexGard need a prescription when flea collars do not?

Afoxolaner, the active ingredient, is FDA-regulated as a prescription drug. Topicals like Frontline and collars like Seresto use pesticide-class ingredients regulated by the EPA, which is why those are sold over the counter.

Does NexGard cover heartworm?

No. NexGard covers fleas and ticks only. If your vet wants heartworm coverage too, they may suggest pairing it with a heartworm preventative or switching to a combination product like NexGard Plus or Simparica Trio.

Is there a generic NexGard?

No. As of mid-2026 there is no FDA-approved generic afoxolaner. Price differences between pharmacies are the main way to save on this med.
